In the other hand, we have monogram toppers: personalized to adorn your cake; they generally go staked on top of it and are usually not edible. Toppers are offered in a variety of colors and materials. These used to be popular back in the day, mostly for quinceañeras and sweet sixteen celebration cakes (topic for a different post.)
Today, bakers all over are making the whole cake in the form/shape the desired letter (or letters.) In short, the cake is and has the shape of the letter itself. These cakes are also known as “letter cakes” and “alphabet cakes”. Here at Tanta’y Miami, we call them Monogram Cakes.
In a city like Miami, where everything is based on detail and décor, these Monogram Cakes are in high demand, not only for birthdays, but also for anniversary and even weddings! T’antay bakers know that there is nothing sweeter than a monogram cake: Our favorite version is made with layers of sponge cake, buttercream frosting, edible flowers, chocolates and even sugar pearls. These cakes are as good as they look and you’ll be sure to receive compliments from your guests.
Can a number shaped cake be a monogram?
There is some confusion, where some people consider cakes in the shape of numbers to be the same as monogram cakes. Even though we can see the similarity, they are different. The definition of a monogram involves a letter, either on its own or combined with another. Our rule of thumb is: if the cake is letter shaped, it’s a monogram; If It’s number shaped, it’s a number cake (great for birthdays or anniversaries.)
